Civil rights is an important area of the law to me. The individual is born with God given rights that entitles the individual to respect and dignity from the government and our society. Those that fail to adhere to these principles may find themselves defending against a civil rights lawsuit. For example, my very first case as a lawyer was a civil rights action. My client, an African-American, was a patron at a large movie theater chain. After my client purchased his ticket, the staff subjected him to an arbitrary search. No other patrons were searched. I wrote a letter to the movie theater chain about our concerns that the search was discriminatory. The movie theater chain scoffed at my claims. They offered two movie tickets to settle the case to show in their words “no hard feelings.” I filed a civil rights lawsuit. A substantial monetary settlement was reached. My client got much more that two movie tickets.
Being a civil rights lawyer is my small way in changing society for the better. I understand that business really pays attention to their profits. And each time they write a check to my client for violating my client's civil rights, they will take steps in the future to avoid writing such checks again.
